France: Cooking and Painting in Southwest France
(Options: Photography, Singing, Barge Rides, Horseback Riding,
Biking, Hiking, Kayaking)
Languedoc-Roussillon, France - 7 nights

Your home for the week is a beautiful domaine situated in the breathtaking Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, rich in vineyards, history and delectable foods. We call this region, the "other South of France" since it is still an undiscovered part of this wonderful country rich in everything from wine, truffles, stunning landscapes and lovely people.

Painting courses during your stay are based around observation and the gathering of visual information. During the courses you will be taken on drawing and photographic trips to the most beautiful settings in the area - Gorge d'Heric, Canal du Midi, Minerve and other medieval villages, fishing ports, fields of grapes or sunflowers, coastal towns and more.

Painting techniques include watercolour, oil, acrylic, collage, glass painting and printing, using digital computer technology. Subjects range from landscape, portraiture and drawing from imagination.

PhotoShop and Illustrator computer programs can be used to convert original images for use in print and design. Computer knowledge is used in combination with scanned artwork to create cards and prints that you can produce yourself.

In addition to your painting courses you will also enjoy gourmet meals prepared by your hostess, who is also an accomplished chef. You will learn traditional French and English Cordon bleu cooking as well as new and innovative ideas which cross cultures and inspire your hidden creativity. In addition to lessons in the kitchen you will visit many fresh local markets, farmers' shops and wine caves for the lessons' ingredients and for education in wine tasting and wine selection for dinner.

The restaurant, located in the chateau, is only available for guests staying at the Domaine. During dinners, the ambiance is lovely and allows for a relaxing evening intermingled with delicious gourmet food, friends and lots of laughter. This was definitely a highlight for me during my visits. You will feel like you are at a special dinner party each evening. You may dine in either the dining room or by candlelight on the terrace.

Need some relaxing time? The garden surrounds the house and comprises 4 acres of secluded lawns, orchard and vines. There is plenty of space for those who prefer peace and quiet. For the more energetic there is a large heated swimming pool, a large trampoline and a separate lawn for playing croquet, badminton, table tennis and giant snakes and ladders. Bikes are also available.

CLIENT REMARKS

"The Languedoc -- A fantastic area to explore. Rich with history and culture, gracious and welcoming people, delicious food and wine, unspoiled mountain and coastal landscapes -- once is certainly not enough." - L. Buckley, Los Angeles, CA

"I’ll never forget the evenings we spent around the beautiful candlelit table. The heavenly four course French cuisine, the incredible array of regional wines, the musical forays and most of all, the laughter and stories we enjoyed with new friends. I don’t think I will ever forget that feeling of warmth and generosity of heart that I felt from our hosts. On our last day, I felt like I was leaving home to go home." - C.Pichel, Hopkinton, MA

"Not knowing a lot about the Languedoc region, I wasn't sure what to expect. After having stayed a few days, I have now found a home away from home. I was pleasantly surprised to find the region so picturesque, the people so open and warm, and the wines truly fabulous... Every evening, dinner at the house was a genuine treat. The food and the company could not have been better. Touring the nearby town of Narbonne on market day was a wonderful experience. I made several purchases that will remind me of my trip to France for many years to come. I'm already planning a trip back! I guess that says it all." - S. Rozum, Prospect, CT

"Dear Jo-Ann -Thank you so much for an unforgettable vacation in France. The hosts at the Domaine couldn't have been more hospitable and friendly. One of the highlights for me were the evening meals, where family and friends gathered around and enjoyed gourmet food, great wines and wonderful conversation. The food was not only beautiful in its presentation, but every meal was delicious. It was the perfect way to end our day by enjoying a meal all gathered together in the chateau. I felt right at home!" - E. Arata, Orange, CT
