Culinary & Wine Tours> Italy> Truffles Galore

Italy
Truffles Galore
Alba, Italy - 2 nights

Meet: Tortona train station
Depart: Asti train station

*It is necessary to arrive in Italy the day before the tour begins, in order to meet the morning shuttle.

Day 1 - Welcome to the Langhe
Piedmont's prized hills are called the Langhe. From this mountainous region comes Piedmont's best wine, truffles, and mushrooms. The Alte Langhe, or high hills, are also the source of delicious Piedmont mountain cheeses like toma. Our welcome lunch takes us to a cheese farm near Bossolasco, where we'll enjoy a buffet featuring fresh and cured cheese. And, of course, we'll meet their makers, both animal and human. After lunch, we'll head to the town of Barolo for a stroll and lesson in the 19th century aristocratic origins of "the king of wines and wine of kings." Afterwards. we'll have our first tasting of its eponymous wine at a leading Barolo producer, Silvio Grasso. Dinner is near our hotel in the elegant medieval town of Alba. Here we'll sample our first truffle dishes, such as homemade egg pasta laced with truffles.

Day 2 - To market, to market
Every weekend in November, the truffle market in Alba brings together truffle hunters with gourmands, restaurateurs, and food-hounds. This morning is dedicated to browsing the truffle market, where truffle spreads, truffle oil, truffle books, and the unadulterated tubers are all for sale. In the afternoon, it's on to Barbaresco, where we'll be introduced to Barolo's younger, silky sibling. Here we'll visit Boffa, an esteemed family-run estate that creates some excellent single-vineyard examples of Barbaresco. Returning to Alba, we'll enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in the elegant surroundings of a 19th century coffee house. Dinner is in Alba at a Slow Foods restaurant, where hunt for truffles is on the menu.

Day 3 - Go fetch!
Meet a real truffle hunter and his dogs, who will provide an in-field demonstration of hunting for this underground tuber. He'll then join us for a light lunch. As we break bread and share some wine, you'll get a true picture of la dolce vita. Then a shuttle to the Asti or Tortona train station (depending on your final destination), arriving by four in the afternoon. Arrivederci!

"I've lived and traveled in a lot of countries, but I honestly can't remember a more beautiful experience - the countryside, the food, the wines, the people. Everything was about as perfect as could be." - Patricia Janof, New York City

"We thought ourselves very lucky to be in a group of knowledgeable wine people and benefited at lot from their experience. We loved Tuscany and thought the tour was an excellent introduction to the region." - Hob Brown, Seattle, WA

"Pat and Claudio were perfect hosts! They both worked hard to insure we had an enjoyable journey while being comfortable companions." - Jim Damaska, Chicago, I

"It was a great tour and a terrific way to get a feel of the region." - Kelly Damaska, Chicago, IL

"I appreciate all the research that went into finding beautiful walks, great restaurants, and interesting wine tastings and tours. Thanks for a great week." - Sally Oberbeck, Fairborn, OH

"I've never had better support on a bike tour. I learned a lot about wine, but also about architecture, art, food, and Italian culture. Keep up the good work!" - Valerie Moore, Midland Park, NJ

"I feel like I've become a "mini-expert" on the wines of Piedmont. Instead of being baffled by the variety of Italian wines available, now I can say, here's something from Alba, and this little Dolcetto will go well with my dinner." - Nancy Donaldson, Portland, OR

"I really did not know what to expect. I'd never been to Italy, knew very little about Italian wines, and never had been on an organized tour. I kept saying tomorrow just can't top this, and then it did. This truly was an awesome experience." - Mary Barton, Atlanta, GA
