Venice, Italy - 4 nights Available June
This gourmet wine tour spotlights Amarone, a cult wine made in the Valpolicella hills north of Verona, in the shadow of the Dolomites. Along with Barolo and Brunello, Amarone stands as one of Italy’s most prestigious and sought-after wines. Enjoy private tastings at top wineries, visit the walled town of Soave and the Renassiance city of Padua, and luxuriate in nightly wine dinners.
ITINERARY DAY ONE FROM VENICE TO PADUA After a pick-up in Venice, we shuttle to the Renaissance city of Padua for some sightseeing. Must-see spots include the Cathedral of Saint Anthony, plus the Arena Chapel, featuring newly restored frescoes by master artist Giotto. Lunch is in Soave, a fortified city where Soave wine was born. We’ll have a winery tour and tasting at Pieropan, a producer who’s leading the Renaissance in Soave wine. The first of our elegant wine dinners is in Verona.
DAY TWO VERONA, HOME TO SHAKESPEARE’S JULIET First the Romans settled here. Centuries later, Shakespeare’s Juliet lodged here. Our walking tour of Verona will cover both, plus loads of history in between. Our introduction to Amarone wine will take place at a top estate, such as Stefano Accordini, where we’ll learn how this wine is made from semi-dried grapes, much like the Roman settlers did millennia ago. We’ll also take a heavenly dessert wine made from red grapes called Recioto, which pairs beautifully with such desserts as sbrisolona, an almond-cornmeal cookie crumble. DAY THREE INSIDE AMARONE
Perched on a hill overlooking a majestic valley is the winery Trabucci, which makes both Amarone and Soave-like wines. In the fall, we might get to see grapes drying in the airy lofts, where they remain 100 days. Our afternoon tasting is further up the mountain ridge – one of five finger-like ridges that make up the Amarone zone — where we’ll visit the biodynamic winery Tenuta Sant’ Antonio. DAY FOUR THE AMARONE MASTERS
This day features some of the best-known players in the world of Amarone and Valpolicella. First we visit Tommasi, a fourth-generation winery that makes benchmark wines. Next is Allegrini, whose pioneering blends garner coveted wine prizes. You’ll have time for last-minute shopping in Verona, or simply a stroll along the river walk or visit to the Roman coliseum. CLIENT REMARKS
"I've lived and traveled in a lot of countries, but I honestly can't remember a more beautiful experience - the countryside, the food, the wines, the people. Everything was about as perfect as could be." "We thought ourselves very lucky to be in a group of knowledgeable wine people and benefited at lot from their experience. We loved Tuscany and thought the tour was an excellent introduction to the region." "It was a great tour and a terrific way to get a feel of the region." "I appreciate all the research that went into finding beautiful walks, great restaurants, and interesting wine tastings and tours. Thanks for a great week." "I feel like I've become a "mini-expert" on the wines of Piedmont. Instead of being baffled by the variety of Italian wines available, now I can say, here's something from Alba, and this little Dolcetto will go well with my dinner." "I really did not know what to expect. I'd never been to Italy, knew very little about Italian wines, and never had been on an organized tour. I kept saying tomorrow just can't top this, and then it did. This truly was an awesome experience." Click here to return to top of page. MAP* This exciting region is depicted below.
